UNICEF warns of spread of cholera in Sudan

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 5 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — More than 640,000 children are currently at risk from the spread of cholera in North Darfur, Sudan, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned.

According to the agency, the disease threatens children already weakened by hunger and displacement, while aid convoys struggle to reach isolated communities amid an intensifying conflict.

More than 1,180 cases of cholera—including some 300 children—and at least 20 deaths have been recorded in Tawila, a city that has welcomed more than half a million people fleeing violence since April, UNICEF said.

Throughout the Darfur region, the figures are even more alarming: nearly 2,140 cases and at least 80 deaths as of July 30, it added.

UNICEF Representative in Sudan, Sheldon Yett, lamented that, despite being preventable, cholera is spreading in this way and endangering the lives of the youngest and most vulnerable.

Given this scenario, the organization called for urgently ensuring sustained, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access.

Since the outbreak was officially declared in August 2024, more than 94,000 cases of cholera and more than 2,370 deaths have been reported in 17 of the 18 Sudanese states. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
