UNITED NATIONS, July 23 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — THE United Nations has pledged to strengthen its partnership with Tanzania in enhancing accountability in local government service delivery in the country, particularly in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This commitment was made by Dr John Gilroy, Chief of Services at the United Nations Office for Partnerships, during a bilateral meeting with Dr Fred Msemwa, Executive Secretary of the National Planning Commission (NPC), held on the sidelines of the ongoing High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Dr Gilroy noted that strengthening local government accountability is a key priority for the UN office for partnerships and expressed readiness to expand collaboration with Tanzania in promoting good governance and inclusive development.
He reaffirmed the UN’s intention to expand its collaboration with Tanzania in fostering good governance through strengthened local institutions.
Dr Msemwa is leading the Tanzanian delegation to the 2025 HLPF, where 36 countries are presenting their progress on SDG implementation through the Voluntary National Review (VNR) process.
The forum comes just weeks after the National Planning Commission launched the Tanzania Development Vision 2050 (DIRA 2050), a long-term strategic plan aimed at achieving sustainable and inclusive development over the next 25 years.
The Vision is anchored on three strategic and interrelated pillars– a strong, inclusive, and competitive economy, human capabilities and social development; and environmental integrity and climate change resilience.
The environmental pillar aims to position Tanzania as a global leader in environmental stewardship, ensuring the sustainable management of natural resources and building resilience to climate change for the benefit of current and future generations.
Dr Msemwa said the NPC is keen to strengthen coordination with development partners, including the UN, to ensure the aspirations of DIRA 2050 are fully aligned with global development agendas and implemented effectively at all levels, especially through empowered local government structures. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
