AUGUSTA (Sicily, Italy), March 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The aid organisation Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) allowed to bring a group of 111 ill migrants in Sicily, after waiting in the Mediterranean Sea for about a week.
The Geo Barents ship will now call at the port in Augusta, the organization announced on Twitter on Monday. It rescued the people in distress at sea in two missions at the beginning of March.
The volunteers of the Spanish NGO Open Arms also brought 28 rescued people to Augusta at the end of last week.
People continually get into distress on the dangerous crossing from North Africa towards the EU. Their destination is usually Italy, from where many make their way further north in the hope of a better life.
So far this year the Italian authorities have registered almost 6,000 migrants arriving in boats, which is roughly the same number as in the same period last year. — NNN-AGENCIES
