AU seeks women’s hand in bringing peace to Sudan, Sahel, Horn of Africa

ADDIS ABABA, Aug 30 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — IN strengthening the African Union’s efforts to advance the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda across the continent, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, held his first official meeting with the AU Special Envoy on Women, Peace, and Security, Ambassador Liberata Mulamula.

The main objective of the discussions was to deliberate on the implementation of the Special Envoy’s specific mandate, in line with the AU’s strategic goals.

During the talks, Youssouf emphasized that the Special Envoy’s role must align with Africa’s broader development strategies, including Agenda 2063 and the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), as well as international frameworks such as United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325.

Youssouf underscored the importance of involving women in leading peace efforts, particularly in conflict-affected regions like Sudan, the Sahel, the Horn of Africa, and the Great Lakes region.

He also encouraged solidarity between women and youth in peacebuilding efforts and stressed the need to integrate gender perspectives in all AU-led peace processes.

On another note, the Chairperson highlighted the importance of close collaboration between the Office of the Special Envoy and various stakeholders, including Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Regional Mechanisms (RMs), AU institutions, UN Women, and civil society organizations, to ensure coordinated efforts and amplify women’s voices across Africa.

Strengthening monitoring and accountability mechanisms, particularly through the Continental Results Framework (CRF), was mentioned as a key priority to enhance member states’ accountability.

Youssouf concluded the meeting by assuring full support for the Special Envoy and emphasized the need for sustainable funding sources to support women, especially those engaged in grassroots peace efforts.

He expressed confidence that Ambassador Mulamula would demonstrate visionary leadership, mobilize effectively, and deliver measurable results within her first year in office. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
