PM Majaliwa: Tanzania ready for peaceful 2025 election

DAR ES SALAAM, June 19 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa has assured the African Union’s Pre-election Assessment Mission (PAM) of Tanzania’s full readiness to conduct free, fair and peaceful general elections this October, upholding a tradition the country has maintained in all previous polls.

The Prime Minister issued an assurance during a meeting with a 17-member PAM delegation, led by former Deputy President of South Africa, Dr Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, at his sub-office in Magogoni, Dar es Salaam.

The AU mission is in the country to assess the state of election preparedness, including the political environment, in line with the principles outlined in the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.

Dr Phumzile commended Tanzania’s progress and preparation efforts, noting that the mission is satisfied with the broad-based reforms currently underway.

“We are pleased with the significant strides made by the government, especially in systems and policy reforms that promote inclusive public participation in the electoral process,” she said.

She also applauded the increasing participation of women in politics, describing it as a positive step toward achieving gender parity in leadership.

“The strong involvement of women in political affairs is a sign that Tanzania is moving steadily toward a 50/50 gender balance in governance,” she added.

Dr Phumzile further expressed confidence that Tanzania will continue its tradition of peaceful elections, stating: “We are accustomed to Tanzania maintaining peace during elections and we expect this spirit to prevail again in 2025.”

Meanwhile, while officiating at the 13th Scientific Conference of the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) 2025, Prime Minister Majaliwa called on scholars and professionals to actively participate in the upcoming election and vote wisely.

“This is an election year. You will be choosing your President, Members of Parliament and Councillors. Use your democratic rights responsibly to elect leaders who will bring development to your communities,” he urged.

He also encouraged academics to consider contesting for leadership positions if they feel called and capable, highlighting the importance of civic engagement.

The Premier cautioned against bribery and voter manipulation, urging voters to reject inducements from dishonest politicians.

“Be wary of individuals who seek your votes through unethical means. Safeguard your integrity and that of the country,” he stressed.

Majaliwa stressed the importance of national peace and unity, calling on citizens to reject any inciting statements from candidates that could undermine the country’s stability.

“Peace is a fundamental national value and it is our collective responsibility to preserve it before, during and after the elections,” he said. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
