ROME, May 25 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Italy’s health services remain on alert due to the spread worldwide, and in Europe, of the new Covid-19 variant LP.8.1, which also arrived in a limited way in this country, it was reportedly informed.
An analysis published on Italia Oggi’s website, based on data from the Instituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), points out that in this European nation 962 cases of Covid-19 infection were detected in the last 30 days, with a total of 17 deaths, relatively low figures but still worrying.
The virologist Matteo Bassetti, director of Infectious Diseases at the San Martino Polyclinic in Genoa, one of the leading centers in the fight against this disease at the national level, said in statements to the press that “we are closely monitoring LP.8.1 and we will see what happens in the coming weeks”.
The LP.8.1 variant, a descendant of Omicron, specifically KP.1.1.3, was first detected in July 2024, and already in January this year the World Health Organization (WHO) considered it to be “under surveillance” even though WHO evaluated as low the risk to public health. — NNN-XINHUA
