Suspect Arrested With 2.8 Kg Of Heroin At Sri Lanka’s Main Airport

COLOMBO, Oct 28 (NNN-LNW) – Sri Lanka Customs’ Narcotics Control Unit, arrested an Indian national, with 2.8 kilograms of heroin, at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), the Department of Government Information said, yesterday.

The suspect, 39, arrived in Sri Lanka from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Sunday afternoon, the department said.

The narcotics, worth 84.96 million rupees (about 283,000 U.S. dollars), were concealed in a false bottom of the suspect’s checked luggage, and the Sri Lankan Customs is conducting further investigations. The suspect and the confiscated narcotics will be handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further legal action.

Sri Lankan authorities have enhanced security at the BIA, to curb illegal activities. A few days earlier, a meeting was held among stakeholders on the matter, and several new procedures were implemented, according to the country’s defence ministry.– NNN-LNW
