LIMA, Aug 10 (NNN-TELESUR) — Peruvian authorities conducted an operation on the border with Chile, during which they arrested six Peruvian citizens who were transporting 38 migrants from various Latin American countries, the National Superintendency of Migration reported.
In a statement, the agency dependent on the Ministry of the Interior specified that it had arrested six “coyotes,” as those who engage in human trafficking are known, belonging to the criminal organization Los discretos de la frontera (The Discreet Ones of the Border).
Following their arrest for the alleged crime of illegal migrant trafficking, the six Peruvians were placed in the custody of the Human Trafficking Unit of the Criminal Investigation Division (Divincri) of Tacna, a region bordering Chile.
“In a mega-operation carried out on the Peru-Chile border, officers of the National Police of Peru (PNP), with the support of the Directorate of Intelligence of Lima and the National Superintendency of Migration, intervened with 38 foreign persons who were attempting to enter Peruvian territory irregularly,” Migraciones stated.
The operation was carried out between points 10 and 12 of the border line, approximately at kilometer 1,331 of the South Pan-American Highway, and was reported to the Prosecutor’s Office operating in Tacna for immediate legal action.
For their part, the foreigners were also transferred to the Divincri of Tacna, where the Migraciones team carried out the respective immigration verification in order to determine the type of infraction committed and initiate the corresponding sanctioning process.
According to local reports, among the foreign citizens identified were 28 Venezuelans, three Colombians, two Ecuadorians and five minors.
General Arturo Valverde stressed that these large-scale interventions are the result of intelligence work and are carried out by elite units, including radio patrol and the Criminal Investigation Division of Tacna, along the border. — NNN-TELESUR
