NAIROBI, Aug 9 (NNN-KBC) — The death toll from Friday evening’s grisly road accident at Mamboleo, Kisumu, has risen to 25, as four more victims succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching & Referral Hospital (JOOTRH).
Nyanza Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Peter Maina confirmed that the crash initially claimed 21 lives—10 men, 10 women, and a young girl—when a school bus from Kakamega, carrying mourners from the Sigoti Clan in Nyakach, veered off the road and plunged into a ditch near Coptic Church. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle.
The accident left five people in critical condition and injured 15 others.
Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga has confirmed that 32 survivors are currently being treated at JOOTRH’s Orthopaedic Trauma Ward, many with life-threatening injuries.
In response, Dr. Oluga has announced an urgent blood donation drive to assist the survivors. The drive will take place on Saturday, August 9, 2025, from 9:00 AM at Leresian Park within JOOTRH, organized by the hospital’s Blood Transfusion Unit.
“This is tragic news for the entire country, and we are united in this sorrow,” Dr. Oluga said after visiting the injured at JOOTRH’s Accident and Emergency Unit.
“The Ministry of Health is doing everything possible to prevent more lives from being lost and to support these families.” He said
He also stated that the Ministry of Interior and National Administration will be on the ground Saturday to assist bereaved families.
Dr. Oluga commended JOOTRH’s emergency response, noting that all survivors were attended to and admitted within three hours of their arrival. A counselling tent and communication desk are being set up to support affected families, while emergency teams work with police to secure personal belongings recovered from the crash site.
“We are moving from the medical response to the social support needed to calm and unite the families as we mourn together,” he added.
The government is urging motorists to exercise extreme caution to avoid further tragedies on Kenyan roads. — NNN-KBC
