TEGUCIGALPA, July 4 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — The Honduran National Police confiscated an extensive plantation with 48,000 coca trees in a mountain sector of the northern department (region) of Colón, the armed institute reported.
In an operation carried out in the village of Río Grande, in the municipality of Iriona (Colón), agents of the National Anti-Drug Police Directorate (DNPA) managed to eradicate an illicit crop with approximately 48,000 plants, with an average height of 2.50 meters.
According to the DNPA, the field covered six blocks of land (approximately 4.2 hectares) in an area of difficult access.
Specialized anti-drug teams also located and destroyed a rustic structure that functioned as a clandestine laboratory for the extraction of base paste, a substance used as a raw material in the manufacture of cocaine.
The municipality of Iriona, especially its mountainous strip, has been subject to multiple interventions in recent years due to the presence of drug trafficking structures, which use the difficult geographical access to establish illegal plantations and processing centers.
This new finding confirms the patterns already detected by police authorities.
The National Police reiterated its firm commitment to fighting drug trafficking head-on, by strengthening its operational and intelligence capabilities to reach the most remote corners of Honduras where these criminal networks operate. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
