ALMATY, Aug 20 (NNN-KNA) – Kazakhstan is upgrading its railway infrastructure, to enhance efficiency and cement its role as a major international transit hub, the government said, yesterday.
The country will modernise 5,000 km of tracks and repair 11,000 km by 2030, the Ministry of Transport reported, at a government meeting, yesterday. Five large infrastructure projects are under way, with two expected to finish ahead of schedule, this year.
The transit volumes are projected to grow to 67 million tonnes by 2029, more than twice that of 2024, local media, the Astana Times reported. The country is expanding its network of logistics terminals, and pursuing agreements to further develop the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route.
Kazakhstan currently operates 1,976 locomotives and 142,000 freight wagons, with plans to expand both fleets by 2029, to meet rising transit demand, said the ministry.– NNN-KNA
