Impounded Air Tanzania plane allowed to leave SA

South Africa court orders release of impounded Tanzanian plane

JOHANNESBURG, Sept 5 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A South African court has set aside an earlier decision to impound an Air Tanzania plane.

On Aug 24, the plane, an Airbus 220-300, had been prevented from taking off from Johannesburg because of a court injunction.

A lawyer had argued in court that a retired farmer was owed at least $13m (£10.6m) in compensation after his land was seized by the Tanzanian government in the 1980s.

The Tanzanian authorities acknowledge that the farmer is owed money but their lawyer believes South Africa has no jurisdiction over the dispute.

The impounding at the time was seen as a major blow for Air Tanzania, after inaugurating its Johannesburg services just two months earlier.

Tanzania, like a number of national fliers, have high hopes on the revival of the national airline.

A move targeted at transforming the country’s airline as a regional transport hub that is expected to stimulate the tourism sector, its largest source of revenue. — NNN-AGENCIES
