Chileans choose presidential candidacy with women as favorites

SANTIAGO DE CHILE, June 30 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Chileans will choose the only official letter to November presidential elections, in a vote in which Jeannete Jara and Carolina Tohá appear as favourite and the rate of participation will be decisive.

More than 15.4 million people are called to vote, but as the vote is voluntary, experts expect the number of attendees to be between 1.5 and 2 million, taking into account the performance of previous years.

The latest polls gave Jara, of the Communist Party (PCCh), 40 percent of voting intention; followed by Tohá, of Democratic Socialism, with 34; Gonzalo Winter, of the Broad Front, with 30; and Jaime Mulet, of the Federacion Regionalista Verde Social, with five.

In the opinion of political analyst Juan Andrés Lagos, these elections have complex variants to make a prediction because it is difficult to project the number of participants on a day where attendance is not mandatory.

Members of the eight left-wing, social democratic or progressive parties that agreed to run for the primary elections as well as people without any political affiliation may vote.

The polling stations will close at 18:00 (local time) and it is expected that by 19:00 there are already some results that could be conclusive.

After an intense campaign, where there were frictions, differences and disqualifications, it is expected that whoever is elected will make a speech calling for sector unity in view of November decisive battle. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
