UN: Migrants at U.S.-Mexico border must be treated with dignity

UNITED NATIONS, July 9 (NNN-Prensa Latina) — Addressing concerns emanating from reports on the gruesome situation on the US-Mexico border, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres stressed that migrants and refugees must be treated with dignity, his deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said.

This is how he responded to questions from the UN-accredited press about complaints made by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, about inhumane treatment of migrants and refugees detained in US territory after crossing the southern border.

According to the High Commissioner, measures to manage the movement of people in this border area must comply with the State’s human rights obligations and not be based on narrow-minded policies to detect, detain and deport irregular migrants quickly.

It further recalled that the detention of migrant children can constitute cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment.

Minors should never be kept in immigration detention centers or separated from their families, Bachelet said, stressing that all countries must ensure the safety and dignity of people on the move. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
