Kenyan Pres Ruto holds talks with UN Sec-Gen Guterres, discussing African security

YOKOHAMA (Japan), AUG 22 (NNN-KBC) — Kenyan President William Ruto on Thursday held talks with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in Yokohama, Japan, on the sidelines of the TICAD 9 meeting.

Their discussions centred on the security situation in the Great Lakes region and the Horn of Africa, with particular focus on Eastern DRC and Somalia.

The two leaders commended the efforts of regional blocs — the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) — in promoting peace in Eastern DRC.

They also discussed the multinational security mission in Haiti and emphasised the need for consistent and sustainable funding

“We also discussed the Multi-National Security Support Mission in Haiti, stressing the absolute necessity for predictable financing. Relying on voluntary contributions is not sustainable. We also underlined the need for more countries to contribute troops to tackle a difficult environment”, the President said.

Kenya was the first nation to send forces as part of a larger effort by the U.N. to offer international support to Haiti. — NNN-KBC
