DODOMA (Tanzania), Aug 7 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — Tanzania’s MINISTRY of Livestock and Fisheries has vaccinated and identified a total of 34,294,322 livestock across the country, just one-and-half month after President Samia Suluhu Hassan rolled out the national campaign in Simiyu Region.

In a speech delivered on behalf of the Minister for Industry and Trade, Dr Selemani Jafo at the ongoing Agricultural Exhibition at Nzuguni Nane Nane grounds in Dodoma, Regional Commissioner Rosemary Senyamule announced that since the exhibition started until Tuesday alone (July 5), a total of 932 cattle and 280 goats and sheep had been vaccinated and identified at the exhibition grounds.

She urged livestock keepers from Dodoma and Singida and even those living in nearby areas who hadn’t brought their animals to the exhibition for the exercise to make use of the opportunity for vaccination and identification.

“This exercise is vital in controlling livestock diseases and improving productivity,” she said.

Senyamule also said that quality extension services remain crucial in achieving productive and commercial livestock keeping.

She said the government will continue to equip extension officers with working tools and refresher training to strengthen service delivery.

She said digital platforms are being embraced to widen the reach of extension services across the livestock value chain.

“I call upon all extension officers nationwide to diligently carry out their duties and deliver quality services. Likewise, I urge livestock keepers to cooperate with officers when approached,” she added.

On fisheries, Senyamule noted that the government is committed to using modern technology to manage the country’s aquatic resources.

Already, one drone has been procured to monitor fishing activities on Lake Victoria, with plans to acquire six more under the same programme.

“This drone technology is cost-effective and capable of gathering data on illegal fishing across large areas in a short time. It also offers an environmentally friendly alternative to boats and vehicles that run on fossil fuels,” she explained. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
