DODOMA, Aug 4 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — Tanzanian PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has officially dissolved the Parliament, a critical step paving the way for the General Election scheduled for Oct 29, 2025.

The announcement was made on Sunday, through Government Notice No. 486 issued on 25th July 2025, in line with Article 90(2)(a) of the Constitution of 1977.

In her proclamation, President Samia invoked her constitutional powers, stating: “I, Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, by the authority vested in me under Article 90(2)(a) of the Constitution, hereby dissolve the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania effective 3rd August 2025, to pave the way for the nomination of candidates and the conduct of the General Election.”

The dissolution of Parliament is a constitutional requirement that enables the nomination of candidates and the subsequent General Election.

Following the dissolution, Parliament will not reconvene until after the General Election and the swearing-in of new Members of Parliament, except under special circumstances outlined in Article 90(4) of the Constitution, which gives the President powers to summon a Special Sitting of Parliament in cases of emergency such as war, disasters or major national crises.

This move marks a significant milestone in the country’s electoral calendar, officially beginning the final preparations for the much-anticipated polls.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has already announced 29th October 2025 as the date for the elections, during which Tanzanians will vote for the President, Members of Parliament, Councillors and in Zanzibar, Members of the House of Representatives.

Despite the dissolution of Parliament, the Cabinet remains intact and will continue to discharge its duties in line with Articles 55(5) and 57(2)(b) of the Constitution.

This dissolution also aligns with Section 1 of the Presidential, Parliamentary and Councillors Elections Act, No. 1 of 2024, which stipulates that the nomination of candidates cannot proceed unless Parliament has been dissolved.

The dissolution ushers in an important period for political parties and aspirants to finalise preparations for the nomination process, campaigns and ultimately, the elections, which are expected to be one of the most closely followed in recent years. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
