LISBON, Aug 4 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — At least 50 people, including 28 children, required hospitalization after bathing on the beach of Nazaré, a renowned spa located north of the Portuguese capital.
The affected people had gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, but none were severe.
Local authorities attributed the incident to an abnormal discharge due to sewage system failures.
The municipality confirmed the temporary ban on bathing since Friday, while monitoring the quality of water in this area frequented especially by international surfers.
In turn, officials acknowledged that waste water caused odours and health problems. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
