MORONI (Comoros), July 7 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has reaffirmed Tanzania’s commitment to strengthening, promoting and preserving the longstanding relations with the Comoros.
She said that this effort aligns with the country’s broader vision of fostering African unity through economic, social, environmental and diplomatic cooperation.
The Head of State made the remarks while addressing the 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations of Comoros, held Sunday at the Malouzini Omnisport Stadium in Moroni, the capital city.
“I bring warm greetings from the people of Tanzania, greetings of love, solidarity and congratulations for the remarkable progress you have made over the past 50 years of independence. The celebrations reflect the deep solidarity rooted in the shared history, aspirations and collective future of our two nations,” said Samia, who was the guest of honour at the event.
She underscored that the bond between Tanzania and Comoros goes beyond formal diplomatic relations, resting instead, on a foundation of Pan-African brotherhood, the Kiswahili language, peace and shared values.
President Samia said that Tanzania views Comoros’ independence as an integral part of Africa’s broader liberation history. She noted that Tanzania supported the Comorian struggle for independence by offering refuge to freedom fighters and providing financial, political and media support.
She also recognised the vital role played by Comorian women, who stood shoulder to shoulder with men in the fight for freedom.
She commended Comoros for the progress it has made in various sectors including the economy, social services, infrastructure and tourism.
She also praised President Azali Assoumani, describing him as a visionary leader, who has steered Comoros toward meaningful development. As part of ongoing efforts to deepen bilateral relations, she noted that the two countries held their first Joint Permanent Commission (JPC) meeting in 2024.
The meeting focused on key areas such as trade, the blue economy, energy, agriculture and transportation and has already contributed to a notable increase in trade between the two nations.
Samia also said that improved transportation links facilitated by Air Tanzania, Precision Air and maritime services are clear evidence of the growing movement of people and goods between the two countries.
She also acknowledged the positive impact of Tanzanian institutions such as the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) and Exim Bank Tanzania in supporting Comoros’ health and financial sectors.
She added that more Tanzanian banks are preparing to expand their services to Comoros, benefitting entrepreneurs and youth alike.
To further strengthen cultural and educational ties, President Samia expressed readiness of the government of Tanzania to cooperate with the government of Comoros in facilitating the teaching of Kiswahili in schools in that country.
“Tanzania is ready to support teaching of Kiswahili language in Comorian schools by providing teaching materials and qualified teachers,” she said.
On climate change, she emphasised Tanzania’s commitment to working with Comoros to protect shared ecosystems for the benefit of future generations.
“As we celebrate 50 years of political independence, our greatest challenge is to achieve economic independence by building fully self-reliant nations. This is the Africa we envision, a continent built by its people using its own resources,” she said.
Samia described Comoros as a nation rich in natural beauty, cultural heritage and human dignity. “Though small in geographical size, Comoros is immense in patriotism, resilience and pride,” she said.
“Fifty years ago today, the people of Comoros broke free from a colonial regime defined by oppression, exploitation, discrimination and slavery. Through unity and courage, they stood firm and claimed their right to self-determination and they prevailed,” she added. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
