Tanzania claims success in anti-narcotic war after seizure of 4.9m kilos

DODOMA, June 28 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has announced that the government’s efforts in combating drug abuse and trafficking have achieved significant success over the past four years under the Sixth Phase Government.

Addressing the 12th Parliament in Dodoma during the closing session of its term, President Samia stated that her administration has taken firm measures to curb the importation, distribution, and production of illicit drugs in the country, aiming to safeguard the health of Tanzanians, especially the youth.

“During this period, we have fought vigorously against drug dealers. We have successfully dismantled networks of importation, production, and consumption. A total of 4.9 million kilograms of drugs have been seized, with over 25,000 suspects implicated,” she said.

She further noted that, to support victims of drug abuse, the government has increased the number of rehabilitation centers from nine in 2020 to 18 in 2025, a move intended to strengthen health services and save the lives of young people.

President Samia emphasized that the government will continue enhancing efforts to control drug use, including implementing concrete strategies to protect and shield the youth from the dangers of drugs, which pose a serious threat to national well-being. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
