Dominican Republic: Another victim of April 8 nightclub collapse dies; total death 234 in the Caribbean worst disaster in decades

SANTO DOMINGO, May 25 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Another victim of a nightclub collapse in the Dominican Republic died on Saturday after spending 46 days in hospital, bringing the total death toll from last month’s disaster to 234, health authorities said.

The roof of the Jet Set nightclub came crashing down in the early hours of April 8 on hundreds of people attending a concert by merengue star Rubby Perez, in the Caribbean nation’s worst disaster in decades.

Authorities found 221 dead bodies under the rubble, but the number of people killed rose as days passed.

A 33-year-old woman who was being treated at a Santo Domingo hospital for severe injuries from the disaster died on Saturday night, authorities there said.

She had spent 46 days in the hospital’s intensive care unit, having suffered injuries to her pelvis, spine and other parts of her upper body.

Two victims of the disaster are still admitted to other hospitals.

An investigation has been opened and Dominican President Luis Abinader has vowed there will be “no government intervention” in the judicial process.

The club’s owner told local media last month the roof had been leaking for years and had “never” been inspected by authorities. The Dominican Republic has no law requiring privately owned buildings to undergo safety inspections.

Victims’ families have filed more than 50 lawsuits against the owners of the nightclub. — NNN-AGENCIES
