UNITED NATIONS, May 21 (NNN-XINHUA) — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed the hope that the appointment of a new prime minister in Sudan will help forge peace.
The secretary-general takes note of a decree by the country’s de facto leader to appoint Kamil Idris as prime minister, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for Guterres, in a statement.
“The secretary-general hopes the appointment will serve as the first step toward inclusive consultations aimed at forming a broad-based technocratic government and forging peace,” said the statement.
Guterres underscores that consensus efforts must be prioritized and lead to tangible progress for the benefit of all the Sudanese people, including by silencing the guns, delivering essential services to all the population and laying the groundwork for a common vision for Sudan’s future, it said.
Transitional Sovereign Council Chairman Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, also the army chief, on Monday issued a constitutional decree appointing Kamil Idris as the new prime minister.
The prime minister’s post had been vacant since civilian leader Abdalla Hamdok resigned in January 2022 following a military coup led by Al-Burhan in October 2021. — NNN-XINHUA
