Kenya seeks China’s support to strengthen security systems

Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, met with Liu Guozhou, Vice Governor of Guangdong Province and Director General of Public Security, in Nairobi

NAIROBI, May 6 (NNN-KBC) — The Kenyan government has announced plans to collaborate with China to enhance its security systems, with a particular focus on strengthening the e-Citizen platform and improving border security management.

This commitment was disclosed during a meeting between Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration Kipchumba Murkomen and a delegation from Guangdong Province, China.

“Our discussions focused on leveraging Chinese technology and expertise to improve our security systems,” Murkomen confirmed after meeting with the Chinese delegation, led by Liu Guozhou, Vice Governor of Guangdong Province and Director General of Public Security, who was on an official visit to Nairobi.

Murkomen was accompanied by Interior and National Administration Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, and Deputy Inspector General of the National Police Service Eliud Lagat.

Liu’s delegation later visited the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services, where they held talks with Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang, Director General of Immigration Services Evelyn Cheluget, and other Heads of Directorates within the State Department at their offices in Nyayo House, Nairobi.

During the meeting, Dr. Kipsang expressed Kenya’s interest in strengthening cooperation with China in technology, education, and culture.

The Principal Secretary underscored Kenya’s commitment to “partnering with China to enhance the e-Citizen platform and improve border control management, among other security initiatives.”

He further highlighted the benefits that Kenya has gained from its strong relations with the People’s Republic of China, citing the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway and the Nairobi Expressway as exemplary projects.

On behalf of the delegation, the Vice Governor of Guangdong praised the Kenyan government for its cordial cooperation with China, stating that it has strengthened economic ties and cultural development between the two nations.

The meeting with the Guangdong delegation comes just days after President William Ruto concluded a five-day state visit to China at the invitation of President Xi Jinping.
