GUATEMALA CITY, April 16 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Guatemala continues to welcome its migrants with specific protocols. Since last January, 11,174 migrants have arrived in the country from the United States and Mexico.
From the United States, 9,059 Guatemalans arrived: 7,112 men, 1,512 women, 435 children and adolescents (NNA), and 302 family units on 101 flights, according to official figures released.
The Guatemalan Migration Institute (IGM) added in a statement that 1,060 persons were received from Mexico on 10 planes and 1,055 on 76 buses. In addition, 15 extraordinary flights have arrived so far this year, transporting 1,050 Bolivians, including 734 men, 246 women, 25 children and adolescents (NNA), and 20 family units.
Data from the IGM revealed that in the first 15 weeks of 2025 (from January 1st to April 9th), 8,786 Guatemalans returned from the United States, 58 percent fewer than the same period last year.
The IGM announced the arrival of planes on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week and highlighted the temporary housing available at the Migrant Assistance Center in the capital for those living in remote communities. The organization also has the support of the Casa del Migrante (Center for Migrants), which guarantees dignified and safe conditions for returnees.
The local administration presented the Return Home Plan early on February in response to the policies of US President Donald Trump.
Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo told migrants that “you are not alone. We know you are going through moments of uncertainty and worry, but we are with you and we will fight for you.”
A few days ago, Father Francisco Pellizzari, director of the Casa del Migrante, said that Guatemala needs to address the structural causes that force its citizens to leave the country, such as unemployment, poverty, and violence. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
