Lopez Obrador Highlights Importance of Free Trade Agreement

Mexico President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador

MEXICO, June 21 (NNN-Prensa Latina) – President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador highlighted on Thursday the importance for Mexico of the ratification in the Senate of the Free Trade Agreement (T-MEC) with the United States and Canada.

He described this as an advance, since Mexico is the first of the three participating countries to end this process and it is now up to the remaining partners.

It is clear there is unity in the country and we agree with the treaty because it has a complement -it is not only to sign a trade agreement or economic and commercial exchange- and it occurs when Mexico promotes productive activities, creating employment and strengthening the internal market

There is a welfare policy for people like never seen before and this complement makes it viable for the T-MEC to be maintained.

We need to promote productive activities through foreign investment, exports and foreign trade that generate employment and help development.

This would be insufficient if it were not addressed to the south of the country, which is the component that now characterizes the new economic policy to seek development that is horizontal and reaches everyone, he argued.

That is why, he said, we are pleased that the T-MEC has been approved to achieve those ends and we thank the senators who ratified the treaty, which was a significant contribution and transmits confidence to domestic and foreign investors and is good for our economy.

This is good news because we passed this stage and the purpose of maintaining economic and commercial relations with Canada and the United States is clear.
