Five Foreigners In Brunei Jailed For Immigration Offences

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, May 23 (NNN-ANN) – Five foreign nationals in Brunei were sentenced to imprisonment and fined, for immigration violations, according to the Immigration and National Registration Department (INRD) of Brunei Darussalam.

According to the INRD, a 64-year-old Filipino was sentenced to nine months in prison, and an 800-Brunei-dollar (590 U.S. dollar) fine, in lieu of whipping for overstaying. The man failed to pay the fine and had his imprisonment extended to 10 months, the local daily, Borneo Bulletin, reported yesterday.

Meanwhile, a 60-year-old Indian national was sentenced to six months in prison for overstaying.

In another case, three Indonesians were arrested and sentenced to prison, including a 50-year-old man receiving a final sentence of six months in prison, and the other two sentenced to two-year imprisonment and three whippings for conspiring to help the 50-year-old leave the country illegally.– NNN-ANN
