Peru’s Indeci: Heavy rains have so far left 58 dead; 23,000 affected people

TUMBES (Peru), March 11 (NNN-ANDINA) — The torrential rains in the coastal and northern highland regions of Peru have so far left a total of 8,222 victims, as well as 23,000 affected, 58 dead, 57 injured, and 8 missing people, National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) Chief Carlos Yañez reported.

The official accompanied Defense Minister Jorge Chavez Cresta in the supervision of actions to attend to the areas affected by intense rainfall in Tumbes, northern Peru. 

From there, Yañez specified that 420 destroyed homes, as well as 2,509 uninhabitable properties, and 14,000 affected homes were reported.

Heavy rainfall also destroyed 41 classrooms, other 375 are affected, and 123 were left uninhabitable, in addition to 60 affected health establishments.

The balance of damages is due to the start of rainy season, the official indicated.

“We have a rain forecast until tomorrow, Saturday March 11, which indicates that heavy rains are expected in Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Ancash, and Cajamarca,” he expressed.

The Indeci head affirmed that, given the aforementioned forecast, he had engaged in coordination with governors of the regions involved to learn about the actions being carried out and their needs. — NNN-ANDINA
