Japanese film festival to make a comeback in October

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 2 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The Japanese Film Festival 2020 (JFF 2020), which enters its 17th edition this year, is set to make a comeback and light up selected Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) nationwide.

According to a statement by the Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur (JFKL), JFF 2020 will be the first film festival to be launched at GSC since the commencement of the Movement Control Order (MCO) back in March.

Following the successful pre-festival event held last month at GSC NU Sentral, a dedicated page on the official JFF 2020 website will be launched in early October to introduce the works of Japanese filmmakers who remotely produced short films during the lockdown.

A video interview with director Yukisada Isao, director of “Pigeon” (2016) that was shot in Penang as part of the omnibus film “Asian Three-Fold Mirror 2016: Reflections”, will also be published on the page, added the statement.

Co-organised with the Embassy of Japan in Malaysia, JFF 2020 will showcase 10 titles comprising a variety of genres – drama, comedy, action and animation, highlighting the colours of Japan through cinema.

One of the titles, “One Summer Story”, will be premiering in Malaysia prior to the release in Japan, which is expected to be released in 2021.

“Through JFF 2020, both GSC and JFKL encourage everyone to visit the cinema once again and enjoy movies on the big screen while adapting to the new normal.

“Audience will also get special gifts by collecting stamps every time they watch a film at JFF,” said JFKL in the statement.

All the film lineup for JFF 2020 will screen at GSC cinemas at Nu Sentral, 1Utama and Mid Valley (Oct 15-21); Penang’s Gurney Plaza (Oct 22-25); Johor Bahru’s Paradigm Mall JB (Oct 29 – Nov 1); and Kota Kinabalu’s Suria Sabah and Kuching’s CityONE Megamall (Nov 12-15).

The statement further said that after wrapping up the east Malaysia tour, the season will continue with “JFF Plus: Online Festival”, scheduled to be held online in late November.

All the films will be presented in Japanese with English subtitles. A complete listings of film synopses, showtimes and general information are available at https://www.jfkl.org.my/events/jff-2020/ and http://gsc.com.my
