Sabah wildlife dept puts to rest seriously injured monkey in Sandakan

SANDAKAN, Sept 3 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD) euthanised a seriously injured proboscis monkey believed to have been hit by a vehicle at Jalan Bambangan Seguntur, Mile 11, near here yesterday.

In a statement here today, SWD said the male adult primate was discovered in a terrible state by a senior government officer who was passing by the area at about 8 am.

“The proboscis monkey was found in a very weak condition and was bleeding profusely. It suffered a broken arm and injuries on its legs, left knee and left thumb.

“Immediate treatment was given to the primate, but the injuries and bleeding it suffered were serious and there was little chance for it to live; therefore, euthanisation was the only way to end its suffering,” said the statement.

SWD appealed to motorists to be careful when passing the area to prevent such incidents from recurring.

Considering that the road is a public area, SWD would not be investigating the incident but would put up signboards to warn of possible appearances of wildlife roaming the area.
