The northern state of Haryana was the worst-hit, with an overall unemployment rate of 33.5 percent during Aug, followed by the northeastern state of Tripura (27.9 percent). Whereas the southern state of Karnataka (0.5 percent) and eastern state of Odisha (1.4 percent) were the better-off states, in absorbing labour forces in Aug, the CMIE data showed.

The unemployment rate in the country during the pre-COVID months, like Dec, Jan and Feb hovered between 7.22 percent and 7.76 percent.

The increasing joblessness in India reflected a worsening jobs’ environment in the formal sector and saturation in the farm sector.– NNN-UNI
