Success of “Geran” at NYAFF reflects local industry’s capability – Saifuddin

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The victory of local film ‘Geran’ in clinching the ‘Daniel A. Craft Award for Excellence in Action Cinema’ at the 19th New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) in the United States shows the local film industry is competitive and is on par with the best Asian movies.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said the achievement of the action film produced by Layar Pictures Sdn Bhd was a proud moment in the local film industry and it reflected the capability as well as aspiration of the film industry towards the ‘Road to Oscars’.

“It is also in line with the framework and direction of the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) to bring the target to reality in the long run. Such efforts should be continued to empower the local film industry at international level,”  he said in a statement today.

Saifuddin congratulated the film director Areel Abu Bakar and the entire production crew for winning the prestigious award.

NYAFF which will be aired online via Smart Cinema application from Aug 28 to September 12, 2020, is a prestigious film festival in U.S. for the development of arts and culture via global cinema network.
