SINGAPORE, Aug 11 (NNN-BERNAMA) — National Parks Board of Singapore (NParks) will be crushing nine tonnes of ivory worth S$18 million to commemorate World Elephant Day, which falls on Aug 12.
The ivory was seized from various shipments in past years, said NParks in a statement here today.
On July 21 last year alone, the republic seized 8.8 tonnes or 1,548 pieces of raw elephant ivory packed in 137 bags and worth about S$17.6 million.
NParks, Singapore Customs and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority seized the ivory from a 40-foot container that was on its way from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Vietnam.
It was dubbed the largest ivory seizure in Singapore to date.
NParks said the nine tonnes of ivory will be pulverised by an industrial rock crusher and the crushing process will be live-streamed on the NParksSG YouTube page.
NParks manages more than 350 parks, 3,347 hectares of nature reserves, the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Jurong Lake Gardens, Pulau Ubin and the Sisters’ Islands Marine Park.
