Indonesia’s Mount Merapi erupts, top flight alert issued

JAKARTA, June 21 (NNN-BERNAMA-XINHUA) — Indonesian volcano Mount Merapi erupted on Sunday, spewing a column of ash by up to six km high to the sky, and the highest level of flight alert was issued, Xinhua news agency reported citing the National Volcanology Agency.

The agency said the wind was blowing to the west of the crater and the residents living near the volcano which is situated in Indonesia’s main Java Island have been barred from entering the area within a radius of three km from the crater.

The agency also issued a volcano observatory notice for aviation with red code following the eruption, saying that it will be dangerous for planes. It said planes are prohibited from passing through the air space around the volcano.

The 2.930-metre high Mount Merapi last erupted on April 2 with a column of ash spreading by up to three km to the sky.
