Cambodia’s Famed Angkor Reports 60-Percent Drop In Foreign Tourists In First Four Months

PHNOM PENH, May 2 (NNN-AKP) – Cambodia’s famed Angkor Archaeological Park, attracted 384,317 foreign tourists, in the first four months of 2020, down 60 percent over the same period last year.

The ancient site made gross revenue of nearly 18 million U.S. dollars from ticket sales, during the Jan-Apr period this year, down 59 percent over the same period last year, said the state-owned Angkor Enterprise’s statement.

In Apr, the park received 654 foreigners, earning 29,368 U.S. dollars from ticket sales, down 99.65 percent compared to the same month last year, it said.

Located in northwestern Siem Reap province, the Angkor Archaeological Park, inscribed on the World Heritage List of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 1992, is the kingdom’s most popular tourist destination.

The slump in foreign tourists was due to the COVID-19 pandemic that forced the country to impose temporary entry restrictions for all foreign travellers, since late Mar to stem the virus spread.

According to a Ministry of Health statement, the Southeast Asian country has so far recorded a total of 122 confirmed cases of the virus, with 119 patients cured.– NNN-AKP
