LA PAZ, Jan 4 (NNN-Prensa Latina) — The Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) is leading a poll in the run-up to Bolivia’s presidential elections, even though it has not chosen its candidates for the posts of president and vice president of the Republic.
According to local media, the television channel Unitel released the poll in which the candidate of former president Evo Morales’ political party would secure 20.7 percent of the vote, surpassing his closest rival, de facto president Jeanine Añez (15.7 percent), by five percentage points.
The poll ranks former president and candidate in the elections of October 20, 2019, Carlos Mesa, in third place with 13.8 percent of the vote.
Further down the list are Marco Pumari and Luis Fernando Camacho, with 8.2 and 6.9 percent, although the poll was conducted before the two politicians presented their official candidacies as running mates in the upcoming elections.
However, experts note that 47.1 percent of those polled said they would vote for a candidate who opposed the MAS, while 23.7 percent said they would vote for the candidate of that political party.
The poll was carried out between Dec 21 and 30, 2019, and has a margin of error of 2.5 percent.
Bolivia’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal will make the call for presidential elections on Jan 6, but MAS will choose its candidate on Jan 19 in Argentina, where Evo Morales is residing as a political refugee after the coup d’état that forced him to resign from the presidency on Nov 10. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
