Chile protests: President Pinera calls for agreements to pacify the country

SANTIAGO, Nov 14 (NNN-Prensa Latina) — Chilean President Sebastian Piñera called on all political forces and social movements to reach three agreements for peace, justice and a new Constitution to stop violence.

After an extremely violent day in this capital and other cities where private and government buildings were set on fire, supermarkets and other establishments were looted, and even a church was burned down, the president returned to the La Moneda Palace.

There he met urgently with Ministers Alberto Espinosa (Defense) and Gonzalo Blumel (Interior), Government spokeswoman Karla Rubilar, and Deputy Interior Minister Rodrigo Ubilla.

The president called for ‘a grand agreement for peace’ to ensure that all political and social sectors end violence, and an agreement for justice to develop what he described as ‘a robust social agenda’ to end the deep inequalities that affect Chilean society.

The third issue addressed was an agreement for a new Constitution, which must be approved with ‘clear and effective participation of citizens,’ including a plebiscite to approve it in order to reach ‘a new social pact for Chile’. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
