UN, partners seek 90 million USD to help victims of failed rains in Zambia

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 28 (NNN-Xinhua) — The United Nations and its partners are seeking nearly 90 million U.S. dollars to provide immediate humanitarian assistance and early recovery support to 2.3 million victims of a poor rainfall season in south Zambia, a UN release said.

According to the release, the failed rains have hit food production hard in Zambia, with the production of maize — a staple food — declining some 16 percent.

An assessment has also found an increase in severe acute malnutrition levels.

As a result of the effects of the poorest rainfall season since 1981, more than 2.4 million people out of total population of some 17 million are expected to be severely food insecure during the lean season from October till March 2020. — NNN-XINHUA
