Venezuelan government protests exclusion from 141st IPU Assembly

BELGRADE, Oct 16 (NNN-Prensa Latina) — Venezuelan deputies of the ruling party protested to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) that they were prevented from being accredited to participate in the 141st IPU Assembly taking place in this capital.

Darío Vivas and Nosliw Rodríguez, lawmakers for the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), sent a letter to IPU President, Mexican Senator Gabriela Cuevas Barron, and Secretary General Martin Chungong, explaining the situation they faced as they arrived at the venue of the event.

They recalled that, given the sanctions and coercive measures applied by the US against Venezuela, the Venezuelan parliament was unable to fulfill its obligation to pay its annual fee to the IPU, but that the registration of three delegates was allowed as an exception.

However, according to the letter, upon arriving in Belgrade, they learned that three deputies from the Venezuelan opposition instead were registered to attend the assembly.

‘That is why we request your good offices to guarantee equal participation and, therefore, the corresponding accreditation as a member or full delegate of a representative lawmaker of the sector that supports the Bolivarian government,’ the letter read. — NNN-AGENCIES
