Seven Wounded In Presidential Campaign Office Blast In S. Afghanistan

LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, Sept 26 (NNN-XINHUA) – At least seven people were wounded as a blast ripped through election campaign office of Afghan President, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, in Lashkar Gah city, capital of southern Helmand province, a local source said.

An improvised explosive device was detonated inside the office of national parliament member, Ghulam Wali Afghan, roughly at 1:30 p.m. local time, in Police District 1 of the city, a security source said.

The building also acts as sitting president, Ghani’s election campaign office, he said.

Meanwhile, a medical source from a surgical hospital in Lashkar Gah, said that, seven people were admitted to the hospital after the explosion.

Unofficial sources said, lawmaker, Wali Afghan, also received minor wounds in the incident.

Omar Zwak, the provincial government spokesman, confirmed the incident, saying, an investigation has been initiated into the incident.

On Tuesday, three people, including a local journalist, were killed and seven people wounded, after an IED was detonated outside an election campaign office for Ghani, in neighbouring Kandahar province.

Wednesday (yesterday) was the last day of the election campaign for the Sept 28 presidential elections.

A total of 18 contenders were registered to run for the presidency, with a five-year term, and among the candidates are sitting President, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and government Chief Executive, Abdullah Abdullah.

More than nine million eligible voters are expected to cast their votes during the polls.– NNN-XINHUA
