Myanmar VP Calls For Public Participation In Fighting Against Human Trafficking

NAY PYI TAW, Myanmar, Sept 14 (NNN-MNA) – Myanmar Vice President, U Henry Van Thio, called for participation of the public, in fighting against human trafficking, when the country marked the seventh anniversary of Myanmar’s Anti-Trafficking in Persons Day on Friday.

The vice president said, the government has taken multifaceted approach to combat trafficking in persons, as part of the efforts under the country’s five-year plan focusing on four areas — policy and cooperation, prevention, prosecution and protection.

Myanmar enacted the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Law on Sept 13, 2005, and steps were underway to amend the law, in line with the present situation in the country.

According to figures from Myanmar’s Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division, 502 traffickers were charged in connection with 176 cases, while 254 people were victimised.

Under the 2005 Anti-Trafficking in Persons Law, people who smuggle women and children were sentenced to at least 10 years, or up to lifetime sentence or fine.

Assets and property involved in human trafficking cases will be confiscated, in accordance with the Anti-Money Laundering Law.– NNN-MNA
