Hurricane Dorian aftermath: Bahamas asks to clean up oil spill

NASSAU, Aug 12 (NNN-Prensa Latina) — Bahamian Attorney General Carl Bethel called on Equinor company to clean up as soon as possible the oil spill at its Grand Bahama facilities caused last week by Hurricane Dorian.

Winds of more than 200 kilometers per hour from the meteorological phenomenon with category five, the highest on the Saffir-Simpson scale, pulled oil from the top of the storage units.

In Bethel’s view, the company has long delayed cleaning up the spilled hydrocarbon that has spread beyond Grand Bahama and moved to the Abacos Islands.

They must use all necessary means to clean up this environmental disaster both in the East End and in the sea,’ he emphasised.

Equinor said in a press release over the weekend that it is mobilizing its resources to safeguard people, the environment and facilities.

The company pointed out that there are no signs of continued leaks, or that oil could escape into the ocean.

Meanwhile, Environment Minister Romauld Ferreira said that Hurricane Dorian has affected many Bahamian families, but obviously protecting the environment remains an important issue.
