Skipper and crew missing after fishing boat hit by merchant ship

PORT KLANG, Sept 8 — A Malaysian skipper and a Myanmar crew member are reported missing after their fishing boat was hit by a merchant ship about 8.3 nautical miles off Carey Island and 11.5 nautical miles west of Tanjung Gabang.

Selangor Maritime director Captain Mohammad Rosli Kassim, in a statement, said the incident occurred about 2 am when the ship hit the Class C fishing boat.

“The skipper and three Myanmar crew members set out to sea at 10 pm yesterday to carry out fishing activities.

“While fishing, their boat collided with a merchant ship, causing the boat to leak. The four of them were thrown into the sea and two of the crew members were rescued by a passing fishing boat,” he said, adding that the damaged boat was then towed to the Pulau Ketam jetty.

Following a report, Mohammad Rosli said, a search was mounted for the missing crew and skipper.
