Hurricane Dorian heads to US east coast after devastating Bahamas

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Hurricane Dorian which has devastated the island of Bahamas, leaving at least 20 dead as it unleashed its fury of wind and rain, is now headed to the east coast of US.

According to an advisory from the US’ National Hurricane Centre and Central Pacific Hurricane Centre, life threatening storm surge and dangerous winds are expected along the coasts of South Carolina and North Carolina as Hurricane Dorian comes their way.

The advisory issued Thursday 5am EDT, also warned that water levels could rise well in advance of the arrival of strong winds, and urged residents in the areas to follow advice given by local emergency officials.

Meanwhile, CCN reported that more than 167,000 people were without power in Georgia and South Carolina.

Hurricane Dorian has left more than 167,000 customers in Georgia and South Carolina without power this morning, it said, quoting poweroutage.us.

The number of people without power across the two states has been steadily rising all morning, with a jump of more than 52,000 people losing power in just the last hour alone.

The bulk of the outages are in the South Carolina, where there are more than 154,000 customers without power.

In Bahamas, Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said Hurricane Dorian had “decimated” some of the areas and expected the current death toll to rise further.

The hurricane winds that hit the Abaco Islands equalled the highest ever recorded at landfall.
