UN Envoy Expresses Concern Over Saudi-Led Airstrikes On Yemen Prison

UNITED NATIONS, Sept 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) – The United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths, called the deadly Saudi-led airstrike on a prison in Yemen a tragedy, and said that, the human cost of this war is unbearable, a UN spokesman said.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said, UN teams in Yemen reported that air strikes hit a former community college compound, on the northern outskirts of Dhamar City.

According to sources, as many as 170 prisoners were being held in a detention facility in the compound.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said, more than 100 prisoners of war were killed in the strike.

Griffiths expressed his hope that the Coalition will launch an enquiry into this incident. Accountability needs to prevail, he said.

Lise Grande, the Humanitarian Coordinator for the UN in Yemen, said, the scale of the casualties was staggering, and she added that the UN sends its deepest condolences to families that are grieving for their loved ones.

Dhamar is about 100 km south of the capital, Sanaa. Both Dhamar and Sanaa, as well as, several other northern provinces have been under Houthi’s control, since late 2014, after they forced Yemeni President, Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and his government into exile.– NNN-AGENCIES
