Oldest rose of Sharon tree in S. Korea
Gangneung, South Korea: A tree of the rose of Sharon, called “mugunghwa” in Korean and South Korea’s national flower, in full bloom in the city of Gangneung on the country’s east coast. Texas, United States, Aug 14 – People explore Battleship Texas in Houston. The ship that served both World War I and World War II and that will be closing for visitors Aug. 25. The Battleship Texas Foundation will be taking over the operations and repairs of the 106-year-old ship. Seoul, South Korea, Aug 14 – Statue symbolizing “comfort women” in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul. South Korea on Wednesday observed the country’s official “comfort women” memorial day for the second year, with a ceremony held to memorialize Korean women who were forced to work in wartime brothels for the Japanese military. The country marked the day as its ties with Japan hit their lowest point in years over disputes that stemmed mainly from compensation orders by its top court against Japanese companies over wartime labor. Istanbul, Turkey, Aug 17 – Turkey’s first national earth observation satellite, named Rasat, completed its 8th year in orbit. The satellite, with design life of 3 years, scanned 15 million square kilometers and shot more than 2,800 images in 8 years, head of Space Technologies Research Institute of Turkey’s Scientific and Technological Research Council (TUBITAK) says.
