British government seeks to cut parliament time

LONDON, Aug 28 (NNN-AGENCIES) — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to ask the Queen to suspend Parliament just days after MPs return to work in September, the BBC reported today.

The move comes only few weeks before the Brexit deadline and is said to be a move to extend the period during which parliament does not normally sit, shutting it for around a month until Oct 14, as part of a drive to prevent politicians from derailing its Brexit plan.

According to BBC’s political editor Laura Kuenssberg, the move will make way for Boris Johnson’s new administration to hold a Queen’s Speech – laying out the government’s plans – on 14 October.

The unprecedented move will limit the amount of parliamentary time available to lawmakers who want to prevent Prime Minister Boris Johnson from leaving the EU without an exit deal.

Johnson’s office did not immediately comment on the reports, which has caused the pound to fall.

It comes a day after lawmakers who are opposed to a so called no-deal Brexit met to discuss ways they could use parliamentary procedure to force Johnson to seek a delay to Brexit.
