Updated: Nora Anne died of gastrointestinal bleeding, says Police

SEREMBAN, Aug 15 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Irish teenager Nora Anne Quoirin, whose body was found in the jungle last Tuesday after having gone missing from a resort for 10 days, had died of gastrointestinal bleeding due to prolonged stress and having gone without food for a long time, it was revealed today.

Disclosing that Nora Anne may have died two or three days before the body was found, Negeri Sembilan police chief Datuk Mohamad Mat Yusop said there were no signs of foul play thus far and that she had not been raped.

He spoke to the media here today following an autopsy on Nora Anne’s remains after the discovery of her body on the 10th day of a massive search-and-rescue mission mounted by the Malaysian authorities.

Queried whether there were signs of violence on her body or she had been a victim of abduction, Mohamad replied in the negative.

“The autopsy revealed that the teenager died of gastrointestinal bleeding probably due to prolonged stress and having gone without food for a long time,” he told a press conference at the compound of the Negeri Sembilan Police headquarters here.

The body of the 15-year-old special-needs girl was found on Tuesday about 2.5 km from an eco-resort in Pantai here after she went missing on Aug 4, a day after she and her family checked in for a holiday.

What had befallen the girl of French and Irish parentage touched the hearts of not only Malaysians but also people around the world, with many expressing gratitude and admiration for the valiant effort of the Malaysian search-and-rescue team that searched for her in the thick vegetation of the Malaysian rainforest.

The case also attracted the attention of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah who expressed sadness over the passing of Nora Anne as they offered condolences to her family.

Pathologists from the Kuala Lumpur Hospital and Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital here conducted the autopsy from 11.45 am yesterday until late into the night. They were assisted by experts from the Chemistry Department and Department of Forensics in Petaling Jaya.

Mohamad said: “There were no signs that Nora Anne was raped. The hymen was intact. There were some scratches and minor wounds on her legs but they were not life-threatening.”

He said the police will track down the owner of the Twitter account who circulated the message that Nora Anne had probably been raped.

“Several samples of tissue from the body have been taken and sent to the Chemistry Department for further analysis,” he said.

Replying to a question, Mohamad said it will be left to the family to decide when to claim the body. “There is no time frame on the claiming of the body. They (the family) can claim it at any time,” he said.

He also said that the investigation is ongoing into what he maintained is a missing person case.

Asked about a report that the French police have opened an investigation into the case of Nora Anne, Mohamad said he is not aware of that. He said, however, that the French, Irish and British police assisted the Malaysian police in the investigation into the case.

The fact that Nora Anne is of Franco-Irish parentage may explain their interest in the case.
