MMEA rescues two Brunei fishermen, nine others still missing

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 9  (NNN-BERNAMA) — Two out of 11 fishermen from Brunei whose boat  drifted into Malaysian waters were found safe around Pulau Tiga at noon today.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in a statement said one of the victims appeared weak and was brought to the Sepanggar jetty before being taken to hospital for further treatment.

It said the agency received a distress call from the Brunei National Search and Rescue Coordination Committee on the incident on Aug 7.

“The Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centre (MRCC) in Putrajaya relayed the information and sought assistance to locate the victims,” the statement said.

Local seamen also informed the Kota Kinabalu Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) that they saw nine people wearing safety jackets in Semarang waters last Wednesday.

A Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) aircraft was mobilised to trace the fishermen at their last known location.
