HANOI, Vietnam, July 25 (NNN-VNA) – Vietnam plans to vaccinate girls against cervical cancer, which kills seven local women each day, local media reported today.
The Health Ministry will implement a human papilloma-virus (HPV) vaccination programme, in the capital city Hanoi, northern Quang Ninh province, central Khanh Hoa province, southern Can Tho city and southern Dong Thap province first.
Each day in Vietnam, some 12 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and seven other women die of cervical cancer caused by HPV, the newspaper reported.
According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Vietnam, a strategic combination of sufficient coverage of HPV vaccination for adolescent girls and sufficient coverage of cervical screening and appropriate treatment for all women, can eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem.
Each year in the world, cervical cancer kills over 300,000 women, 85 percent of whom live in developing countries, according to the World Health Organisation.– NNN-VNA
