KATHMANDU, Jan 10 (NNN-XINHUA) – Kathmandu Metropolis, the largest city in Nepal, hosts the largest number of people living below the poverty line, compared to other cities in the country, the government’s National Statistics Office (NSO) said, yesterday.
As many as 59,218 people in the city are living in poverty, the highest number of people living below the poverty line, among the country’s 753 local governments. A 2021 population census showed Kathmandu Metropolitan City had a population of 862,400. People living below the poverty line in the metropolis account for 6.87 percent of the city’s total population, the NSO said.
According to the NSO, an analysis of poverty rates at the local level shows that, 309 local governments have poverty rates below the national average of 20.27 percent, while the remaining 444 local governments have poverty rates above the national average. At the local level, poverty rates range from a minimum of 1.18 percent to a maximum of 77.89 percent, it said.- NNN-XINHUA
